Boardwalk Project

Friends of MLML would like to provide the general public with the unique opportunity to learn more about the dune and marsh ecosystems that are located on the property of the labs. To access these communities, a boardwalk trail starting at the northern boundary of the laboratory in the Cypress Grove will wind down the slope through the native plant dune restoration area, marsh area and arrive at a observation platform on the Old Salinas River. Rest and viewing platforms and interpretive graphics highlighting dune and marsh ecology will be located along the trail. The boardwalk will provide public access, as well as a platform for research by MLML's faculty, staff and students.

Friends kicked off a fundraising campaign with the "Walk the Plank" special event at MLML on May 5, 2001. Support for the boardwalk was raised through ticket sales and silent auction. Live music, dinner and speech by Congressman Sam Farr contributed to a memorable event.

In appreciation of a donation of $250 or more, Friends will engrave your name, company name, or organization name (up to 26 characters) onto a six-foot plank that will be placed on the boardwalk. Planks may also be purchased as a memorial or a gift.
