The Archimedes Scholarship was founded by Beverly J. Lange, an alumna of the SJSU Chemistry Department, and Lester H. Lange, Chair of the Math Department 1961-1970, and Dean of the College of Science for nearly two decades before his retirement in 1988. Saying they were themselves grateful examples of the fact that "None of us became educated without the help of others," they expressed the hope that this permanently endowed scholarship pays society back at least a little bit.
