"To support research, education and conservation at MLML"

On-Site Public Tour Program

The Moss Landing Marine Labs are an ideal setting for educating and involving the public in marine science. Perched on a hillside with dramatic views of the Monterey Bay, visitors can see from Monterey to Santa Cruz, as well as view the Old Salinas River and nearby wetlands. Tours enable the visitor to access areas of the labs that would otherwise be off limits (research labs, library, classrooms, basement, corporation yard, research museum, and aquarium room).

Guided tours may be arranged for groups of 10 or more persons, reservations required. Please call Friends Office at 831-771-4100 for reservation. A tour will last approximately 1 to 1.5 hours and include information about topics such as research, education and conservation efforts at MLML, as well as building architecture and rebuilding projects (restoration, archeology and legless lizards).

Who can tour MLML?

  • School groups (usually high school & community college)
  • Scout troops
  • Local businesses & organizations (e.g. Rotary Clubs)
  • Visiting scientists
  • Prospective MLML students
  • Nature enthusiasts
  • Conservation/Environmental groups or clubs

What Are the Goals of the Tours?
  • To introduce visitors to research, education, and conservation efforts at MLML by sharing stories and guiding them through our facility and surrounding property
  • To educate the public about the role scientific research plays in the preservation and conservation of the world's oceans

What Ideas Do We Want Visitors To Leave With?

  • Science is a tool for making change
  • Science is familiar
  • How humans influence the environment
  • The past (i.e. history) gives us a tool to study the present and future
